根子写真館

Client: Yoma Funabashi

Visual Identity for a Photo studio in Nekko village owned by Yoma Funabashi, a Photographer and Matagi bear hunter.

Nekko village in Ani-Matagi region (north Akita) is known as the origin of ancestral hunter and gatherer tradition called Matagi.
The village is surrounded by mountains and gathering streams at the bottom of the basin. Nekko is derived from Ainu, the indigenous Japanese tribe’s word. Net=floating woods, Kot is a basin. Ne’kot means ‘The basin where gathers floating woods’

I drew a simple sketch based on my impression from the last visit in early Spring. It became a logo mark in the end. He feels happy about settling in this place every time in early spring. He says the logo mark looks like left spring snow o the mountain far in a distance. Also like a Matagi’s hand-drawn hunting map which captures the landscape by simple streams and ridge lines.

根子写真館

Client: 船橋陽馬

阿仁マタギの土地として知られる、北秋田市阿仁地域根子集落にある、写真家・船橋陽馬さんの写真館のロゴマーク。船橋陽馬さんはマタギでもあり、この土地に古くからある狩猟の伝統を継承している。根子集落はすり鉢状に山に囲まれ、沢が合流する場所だが、根子（ネッコ）はアイヌ語の「Ne’kot（ネコッ）」に由来する。Net (ネッ)は漂木、Kot（コツ）は窪地。Ne’kot（ネコッ）は「上流から流れ着いた漂木が溜っている窪地」という意味になる。以前訪れた春先の根子集落の記憶を元に、直感的に描いたスケッチがそのままロゴになった。いつも春になるたび「この土地に来て良かった」と感じる陽馬さんには、遠くの山の斜面に春の残雪が残っているようにも、沢や稜線で山岳の特徴を捉えたような線は、またマタギが描く狩猟地図にも見えたとのこと。
